Majors at the University of Connecticut

Foreign Language Education

When one majors in foreign language education he/she is preparing to teach French, German, or Spanish to middle and high school students. A foreign language education major must take courses in grammar, literature, culture, and civilization pertinent to the foreign language he/she is studying. Students in the Neag School of Education take part in an integrated bachelor/master program which includes a five year curriculum designed to introduce students to both professional education courses as well as subject area courses. As a foreign language education major, one will learn to teach listening and speaking skills, as well as the culture of the language. It is strongly recommended that one take the earliest opportunity to study abroad, and take the most courses in his major language possible.

Nature of Work

Foreign language educators teach students how to speak, write and comprehend a foreign language, as well as teach them the culture of that language. Foreign language teachers incorporate textbooks, audio, and videocassette tapes in their lesson plans to aid in teaching students. The Internet and computer programs can also be used to augment a teacher’s lessons. Foreign language teachers usually teach one language such as Spanish, French, German, or Latin. Like all teachers, foreign language teachers must assign and grade homework. They will make, administer, and grade tests, as well as evaluate their students’ progress. They must also attend faculty meetings, meet with parents and school counselors, and attend teacher training days. Foreign language teachers will also have to teach students from different racial and economic backgrounds. Foreign language teachers are often in charge of ordering and keeping inventory of their teaching supplies.

Useful Skills

Important skills to have as a foreign language teacher include communication and organizational skills. Furthermore, being able to effectively speak and listen to students is an important quality for foreign language teachers to possess. Comprehension of the language being taught is also essential as is the ability effectively demonstrate ideas and concepts.

Getting Experience

There are several ways to get experience within the field of foreign language education. The Neag School of Education provides ample experiential opportunities through their system of clinic placements, student teaching, and internships. However, for those interested in learning more about the field, one may partake in a job shadowing program that allows the student to follow a foreign language education professional for a day.

Employment Opportunities

Depending on where a foreign language teacher wants to work, there is a range of employment possibilities. Middle schools hire foreign language teachers, as do junior high and high schools. In more urban areas the demand for teachers is higher, whereas demand in rural and suburban areas tends to be lower.
