There are a lot of ways to find opportunities for jobs, internships, and careers, and there are a lot of people who will offer guidance and advice if you network with them. Networking takes many forms, it can be connecting with a professor, joining a club or professional organization, or taking to the largest networking site, LinkedIn.
While many college students know what LinkedIn is, (if you don’t, don’t worry, think of it like Facebook for professional connections and networking), not everyone understands how to navigate through all of its information. With over 575+ million users, it can feel intimidating. Let me show you some hidden tricks and tips to help you learn from professionals in the field, understand current trends, and get an insider edge!
For connecting with individuals, there is a good deal of information out there. For a great primer, check out this from our webpage.
That link will help you with the basics, now let’s talk how to get at those tips and tricks that aren’t so obvious. Let’s talk about groups. At the top of your screen when you log in is a search bar with a pull down arrow to the left of it. If you pull that down and select “groups” you can start searching for things related to your career. Simply typing in words and phrases like education, teaching, common core, reading instruction, and more will yield you all kinds of results. Planning on teaching mathematics? There’s over 19,000 members in a group that discusses and shares information on common core standards. Interested in teaching abroad? There’s a group for that too! Do you aspire to be a principal or superintendent, there are groups discussing issues related to that.
So why should you care? Participating in these groups gives you a forum where people want to talk about issues that pertain to your chosen profession of education. It’s an easy way in! Groups tend to be a welcoming place to exchange ideas and share information. If you spend some time on these groups you will be more current, more connected, and better prepared to make a great impression in your interviews and face-to-face networking opportunities.
Take ten minutes (yes, that’s all it can take to get started) today and start uncovering all the hidden gems that are out there in this community of 575+ million!
