Prepare for the Fair: A 3 Step Guide to Making the Most of the Internship Fair

Whether you are a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior; the internship fair is a great place to gain experience talking to employers, learn more about your specific industry, network, and even get an internship offer.  This year, the internship fair is on Wednesday, February 3rd from 11:00AM to 3:00 PM in the Student Union Ballroom which means that it is quickly approaching.  In order to make the most out of the fair, you must prepare.

Step 1: Prepare your mind

One of the most important parts of preparing for any networking activity is to prepare your mind.  You must know what it is that you are looking for as you go into the career fair.  Come up with your objective for the day and stick to it.  Your objective can be simply to network and gain contacts, or it can be to land an internship for the summer.

Once you know your objective, work on your sales pitch.  This pitch should be a compilation of your name, major, objective for being at the internship fair, and why you are interested in talking to the specific employer.  You can also include a major accomplishment or specific trait about yourself if it ties into your pitch well.  If you are unsure of how to go about preparing a pitch, feel free to stop by the Center for Career Development in Wilbur Cross room 202 and one of our staff will be sure to help you.

Step 2: Prepare your appearance

First impressions are key to employers and you must be sure to set a good one for yourself.  This means dressing professional, looking put together, and having resumes that are aesthetically pleasing.  Make sure that you have properly fitting business attire before the event.  Ensure that your clothes are wrinkle free and that your resumes are packed into a padfolio so to not cause any wrinkles or damage.

Step 3: Prepare your attitude

Practice makes prepared, preparation makes confident, and confidence is key when dealing with activities such as career and internship fairs.  Keep this in mind when going into the internship fair.  You must be confident and have a smile on your face when navigating the fair.  Do not let one bad conversation knock you down for a whole career fair.  If you enter the internship fair with an open mind and a positive outlook you will achieve a much better outcome then if you enter otherwise.

If you are still unsure of how to best prepare yourself for the fair, make a lasting impression, or ask key questions to employers then keep educating yourself.  Come to the “Navigating the Internship & Co Op Career Fair” Presentation on Wednesday, January 27th from 5:00PM to 6:00PM in HBL Class of 47’ Room.  You will hear from a panel of recruiters about the do’s and don’ts of career fairs.  You can also learn about how to present yourself and how to prepare for the day.
