A New Leadership Challenge: Leading Off Campus

Print

Are you an all-star student leader in search of a new challenge or are you interested in learning how to become a change agent? You may want to consider the leadership program, Leading Off Campus (LOC).

LOC is a collegiate leadership program for college students in the Greater Hartford area; established by an amazing nonprofit organization, Leadership Greater Hartford (LGH). Personally, I’ve had the pleasure of participating in one of LGH’s leadership programs, Quest; and served as a panelist for LOC.

LOC is a selective leadership challenge for students who have demonstrated exemplary leadership on their college campuses and are nearing completion of their degree.  The goal of Leading Off Campus is to help students build strengths in the following areas:

  • Advocacy & Community Development
  • Team Building
  • Project Management
  • Goal Setting
  • Communication
  • Networking

Throughout the program students will be tasked to work on a community issue, while challenged to use Kouzes and Posner’s Five Practices for Exemplary Leadership; learned throughout the LOC workshops.

Do you qualify?

Students interested in applying for LOC must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA
  • Full-time or part-time student (traditional and non-traditional students are all eligible)
  • Hold leadership positions on-campus and/or hold other organizational/professional leadership roles
  • Desire to increase leadership skills and knowledge of the Greater Hartford community
  • Demonstrate ability to work well in a team
  • Complete the LOC application
  • Secure a nomination from a staff or faculty member

Leading Off Campus is not a free program however, many students who’ve participated in the program have secured funding through their universities. Many colleges and universities have different sources of funding. These sources can include student leadership development funding, student activities fees, scholarships, foundation support and alumni support. Leadership Greater Hartford also has scholarships available for students interested in applying.
