As a Career Consultant and Pinterest addict, it’s no surprise that I have a Pinterest board with almost 200 career-related inspirational quotes. My Pinterest feed is your typical mix of mouthwatering foods, life hacks/diy projects, and wanderlust images. The other day I was browsing my Pinterest feed and a career quote stood out to me:
“I’m constantly torn between ‘if it’s meant to be, it will be’ and ‘if you want it, go get it.’”
Instead of pinning the thought as great life inspiration, I couldn’t help thinking, “Nooooooo! These are not mutually exclusive concepts.”
You’re not doing yourself any favors by sitting back and letting “life decide” if something’s meant to be. Chances are if you wait for good things to happen to you, you won’t be very satisfied with the results. If you work hard and do all the right things, will all of your dreams come true? Probably not! But you’ll be a whole lot closer to a future you’ll be happy with than if you sat on your couch waiting for luck to find you. As the lottery saying goes, you can’t win if you don’t play.
And so when it comes to careers, you have to play. You need to get out there, explore your options, take advantage of random opportunities, leave a positive impression on others, and make the most of the chances that come your way. If you do all these things and the original dream doesn’t come true, then maybe it’s because life is lining up something you couldn’t even imagine when you first began your journey. Don’t judge your career success by whether or not you achieve your initial career goal, judge it by the joy and fulfillment you gain from where you are now. If you’re not feeling the joy yet, keep working to build it!
