Expand Your Career Options

‘A career in academia is the only choice for someone with a PhD,’ is a very common and widely held graduate school myth. Even those who already have a PhD, or are in the process of obtaining one, often report that they are not sure what other career options exist for them beyond entering the academy. Many PhD candidates also express that they do not know how to start exploring different career pathways, that they are unfamiliar with career development and job search resources available, and wonder about whom to approach with their career questions.

To help answer all these concerns, the Center for Career Development is launching a new program called ‘Expand Your Career Options’. This is a speaker series that celebrates career diversity and features PhD alumni from UConn who have transitioned into a range of career sectors. The program is tailored toward graduate students and post-doctoral scholars.

The goals of this series are:

  • To help students learn about career fields in which graduate students from diverse disciplines can find employment;
  • To draw attention to the highly marketable transferable skills that graduate students possess;
  • To highlight how these transferable skills can be effectively leveraged to find positions in a range of career sectors.

During each session the presenter(s) will discuss their job search strategies, share insights and tips on working in the particular industry, and answer questions from the audience.

If you are a current graduate student or post-doctoral scholar who is curious about different career choices then come and join us for the Expand Your Career Options events.
