Networking when Job Searching…. Where to Begin?

Networking is the best way to form mutually beneficial relationships and trade information, opening a pathway of possible opportunities. Nonetheless, there is a stressful stigma of networking being an arduous process that involves selling yourself and the unrealistic requirement of being an extrovert. Not to mention, where to even begin this process?

In reality, networking comprises the art of connection and branding yourself not only as a potential candidate but a reliable individual, and relies on more than a perfect sales pitch and a strong handshake.

Break the networking stigma by thinking of it as simply listening carefully and asking questions. Be present with the conversation between you and others; genuine listening allows you to find that connection and gather information to form questions and thoughts on what resonates with you from that conversation.

One of the best ways to start and put these tips into practice is to attend virtual information sessions, panels, and employer events.

If you are interested in Digital Media & Design, Communications, Marketing, and Sports Design/Production in the media and entertainment industry, the Center for Career Development’s upcoming virtual information session with WarnerMedia, WarnerMedia’s Creative & Sports Careers: Internship Information Session on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, at 12:00 p.m. might be just the right fit for you and opportunity to begin networking,

WarnerMedia, a leading media and entertainment company, parent of well-known brands like HBO, HBO Max, Warner Bros., CNN, TNT/TBS, TurnerSports, and Cartoon Network, will be presenting on their undergraduate internship opportunities as well as addressing questions from UConn students about their entry-level opportunities and other areas.

Logging on to this virtual event to learn and listen, and perhaps typing a question you may have in the chat box, is a great starting point for networking with WarnerMedia.  Follow up is key so that you can build that professional relationship.  Once you have that connection and genuine tie, following up and networking can be easy, and fun!
