How to Use Job Market Insights

Did you know the Career Center’s website has a tool that will allow you to see real life employment data from across the country? It’s called Job Market Insights (JMI), and if used right, it can help inform your career decision-making.

Locate “Job Market Insights” on our website toolbar. It is located in the upper-right corner of your screen, fourth from the right. Once you click, you will be redirected to the JMI page, where you will have two options: “Find Career Data by Selecting Keywords” or “by Filtering for Industry and Occupation.”

For the first option, type a career or keyword that interests you, and various occupations related to that career will be listed. If you need help with keyword ideas, check the Majors to Careers resource page, or check out Career Communities. “Doctor,” for instance, brings up such occupations as “Naturopathic Physicians,” “Dentists, general,” and “Audiologists.” Now, you may not know what an audiologist does, so that’s where JMI comes in handy. It gives you such data as what the job’s role is, its core tasks, employment trends, top employers, annual earnings, and technical and soft skills required.

This data comes from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration (USDOL/ETA). You can further tailor your search based on where you want to find employers. For example, selecting a specific state will show you employers hiring there.

For the second option, start with selecting an industry from the dropdown menu. If we choose “Finance,” for example, careers related to that field will pop up. This is just an easier way to explore Job Market Insights. If you don’t know where to start off, begin by selecting from a list of industries.

Select a specific industry from the dropdown.

Additionally, you can further customize your insights by toggling whether you want to see data in chart or graph format. Finally, there’s a print button which arranges your insights in a nice format to keep for your records. Check JMI out, and schedule an appointment with a Career Coach by going to Handshake to further discuss what you see!
