Student Success Story: Ateeb Rahman

Ateeb Rahman is a junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Aerospace. Currently a mechanical engineering intern for Hanwha Aerospace USA, Ateeb hopes to become an astronaut in the future to help progress space exploration.

Describe what you do in your internship. How does it relate to your future career goals?

Hanwha is an Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering firm. The branch of Hanwha that I worked for specializes in Integrated Blisk Rotors. While interning for Hanwha, I was responsible for creating and managing operation sheets for various projects. I also analyzed CNC machines and tools to improve the efficiency, precision, and quality of the processes/products.

Although my future career goals are more along the lines of space exploration, interning at Hanwha was very beneficial to myself and my career. I learned a lot about product design as well as how to work with a highly functional team of engineering professionals. The work environment was very welcoming and productive. I am grateful for the internship experience as it gave me insight into the industry of aerospace engineering in CT.

How has your involvement in student organizations such as UConn Electric Motor Sports, UConn Homies, and Muslim Student Association supported you throughout your college experience?

Being involved in student organizations has allowed me to root myself in the university and establish meaningful relationships with my fellow UConn go-ers. Organizations such as UConn Homies emphasize a sense of community and pride in being Huskies. Everyone should join the UConn Homies (especially Homer B. enthusiasts). I appreciate the variety of student organizations at UConn, as they have made my experience as a student that much more enjoyable and wholesome.

How have mentors played a role in your personal and professional development?

My mentors and role models have contributed to my drive and ambition to chase my dreams and goals in both my personal and professional life. What I have accomplished as a student and as a person can be greatly attributed to their guidance and support. While I may not uphold consistent communication with all of my mentors, I know that all of them want me to be the best version of myself and that is what motivates me to give 100% every day.

What advice would you give to anyone interested in pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree?

For people considering Mechanical Engineering, it’s a fun major and it’s really interesting learning about all of the different topics. UConn’s School of Engineering is supportive and provides a plethora of resources for the students to take advantage of. I chose MechE because of my interest in space exploration and I have not regretted my decision at all.

The course load can be overwhelming at times. I’ve found that breaking everything down and taking it one step at a time leads to better learning and understanding.  Make sure to balance your academic life and personal life. There’s more to UConn than just classes, make sure to take a step back when you can and have fun. Relax, slow down, and have a good time.
