The Career Champion Spotlight for October 2022 is Dr. Manish Roy. Dr. Roy is an Assistant Professor in Residence in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering. He has been a Champion for two and half years and has been a member of the Career Champion Advisory Board since August of 2020. He integrates cover letter writing, resume writing, and interviewing modules into his courses for his students’ benefit.
Dr. Roy was motivated to become a Career Champion during his Ph.D. years at UConn. He was a direct beneficiary of the Center for Career Development and wanted to give back. Our very own Kay Gruder got a shoutout from Dr. Roy, who said “Kay Gruder rocks!”, and mentioned how, in one of the Career Champions Information Sessions, our Director Nancy mentioned that a study had found that the majority of the students had received career advice from faculty members (more than the career services staff members). This also motivated Dr. Roy to become a Career Champion.
Becoming a Career Champion has changed the way Dr. Roy gives his students career advice. He tries to talk about careers more in his discussions with students both inside and outside of the classroom. Also, the Career Champion Program has helped him connect and network with other Career Champions, especially those who are in the same industry.
When asked what advice he would give to students who are beginning their career development journey, Dr. Roy said the following, “Preparing for career is a long-term process. Consider the time spent on it as an investment for your future. Start the process early. And, if possible, try to get an internship in the field of your major early in your academic career.”
