USG: A Gateway to Government and Administration

Since 1894, the University of Connecticut has been home to a strong Undergraduate Student Government (USG). USG is recognized by the Board of Trustees and helped launch popular organizations like The Daily Campus, WHUS, SUBOG, and RHA. As the voice for all students at the University of Connecticut, USG is heavily involved in university-wide decision-making processes.

USG spearheaded the Husky Market Initiative to fight food insecurity at UConn. Additionally, USG posts student resources on their website about Covid, academic information (like free New York Times), and a form to contact your student body representative.

Leading through advocacy and integrity, USG is an excellent introduction to government structure and budget operations in the professional world. For someone interested in learning more about government and considering entering the public administration world, USG is an excellent place to start. You can gain experience in Becoming Career Ready- NACE Competencies of transferable skills like critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills in addition to administrative and creative skills.

How to get involved:

  • Elections to serve on USG through the Senate and Caucus seats are held periodically through the academic year. More information can be found here. Running for office is one of the ways students can become involved with USG.
  • Joining one of the four committees (Academic Affairs, Student Development, External Affairs, and Student Services) helps focus on a specific area critical to the overall success of the university student body. Those interested in receiving more information and joining a committee can complete this form. Each committee meets once a week.

Joining USG is a valuable (and FUN!) way to get experience in the Government, Public Administration, and Law community. I encourage interested parties to research USG and sign up using the provided links to receive more information and join a committee and run for office!
