Business Opportunities (Outside of the Classroom)

If you are looking for more ways to get involved academically in business, consider checking out business-focused institutes on campus.

Werth Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation

The Peter J. Werth Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation brings together myriad programs that foster entrepreneurship and innovation, supporting ideas that potentially have commercial application and can be used to create new companies. In addition to nurturing innovation, the Institute facilitates programs including entrepreneurship speaker forums and hosts an entrepreneur-in-residence to instruct students. Offered programs include NetWerx, a partnership between UConn students and alumni focused on applying an entrepreneurial mindset to future development. Another program is the HackUConn event where students engage in a 20-hour marathon session of invention with industry experts. The Werth Institute also hosts weekly events. Subscribing to the Werth Institute’s newsletter and sending an email to werth.institute@uconn.edu can help interested students get involved. The Werth Institute is in the Wilbur Cross Building, Suite 104A.

CT Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation

The Connecticut Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is another campus department that offers students many business opportunities. Students can explore venture building, such as the Get Seeded program where you can pitch an idea and receive funding. Connectivity is available through the CCEI mentor network, including a woman in entrepreneurship network. Also, students have an opportunity for experiential entrepreneurship through programs that engage students in local startups and small businesses, like Verge Consulting Fellowship. In addition, the CCEI offers opportunity in research and teaching through academic classes, including the InsurTech course that teaches students the needs of a rapidly changing insurance industry, and emerging technologies disrupting the industry. For those interested in working for the CCEI, the CCEI employs student ambassadors that assist in student recruitment of programs offered by CCEI. Those interested in the programs offered by the CCEI can email ccei@uconn.edu with any questions and sign up for their weekly newsletter.

Student Organizations

A final way to get academically involved in business is through student organizations. Student groups strengthen leadership skills, teach time management, and are a fantastic way to build friendships. UConn offers hundreds of clubs and organizations, including several business organizations. The wide-ranging list of societies include the finance society and accounting society. Associations like the sports business association are open to interested students. Check out the whole list of business minded organizations!
