Ready, Set, Career: Your Career Readiness Checklist

Starting your graduate program is an exciting time, and it’s essential to begin preparing for your future career from the very first semester. Don’t leave your career readiness to chance—take proactive steps early in your degree program to set yourself up for success. Here’s eight actions you can take to enhance your career preparation:

1. Visit Career.uconn.edu

Your first stop should be the Career.uconn.edu website. Head to the “How do I…” section and select a topic from the drop down that aligns with your current career preparation interests. This will direct you to resources that match your unique needs.

2. Explore Career Tools

Consider using one of the career exploration and planning tools offered by the Center for Career Readiness and Life Skills. These tools can help you confirm your current career interests or introduce you to new ones. Use them to begin mapping an action plan for your career journey.

3. Check the Events Calendar

Stay informed about upcoming events and opportunities by periodically scrolling through the Center for Career Readiness and Life Skills events calendar. Here you’ll find presentations, workshops, and recorded webinars that are designed to enhance your career preparation.

4. Log Into Handshake

Handshake is UConn’s platform for career prep. Log in to schedule conversations with career coaches and to register for events that can enhance your professional growth.

5. Read the Daily Graduate Student Announcement

Every day around 11 a.m., you’ll receive the daily Graduate Student Announcement in your UConn email. This is a key resource for staying up to date on career-specific events tailored to graduate students. Make sure to read it regularly so you don’t miss out!

6. Explore the Career Community for Doctoral Students

If you’re pursuing a doctoral degree, the Career Community for Doctoral Students is a helpful resource. Here, you’ll find blog posts, career advice, job postings, and information about student and professional organizations.

7. Visit the Affinity Community for International Students

If you’re an international student, access the Affinity Community for International Students. This resource is designed to support students on a student visa or those who self-identify as international. It offers tailored resources to help you navigate the unique challenges of career preparation as an international student.

8. Schedule an Appointment with a Career Coach

Finally, schedule an appointment with a Career Coach to discuss the resources and programs available to you. Career Coaches can offer personalized guidance, working with you to develop a career plan, and recommend resources and programs that will help you take full advantage of UConn’s career services.

By engaging in a few of these actions and utilizing resources during your first semester, you are positioning yourself for success in both your graduate studies and your future career. Start early, stay informed, and make the most of the resources available to you. Your career journey begins now!
