Jessica Grove’s passion for career exploration and development was ignited long before her time at the University of Connecticut. As a college athlete at her alma mater, she initially found that being an athlete made her academic choices feel secondary to her sport. This unique perspective alleviated the pressures many students face when selecting majors and careers, allowing Jessica to explore her interests freely, without any preconceived notions or external pressures.
In her undergraduate years, Jessica began taking Psychology courses and officially changed her major at the end of her sophomore year. She delved deeper into understanding human behavior and began to see the potential for integrating her interests in education and personal development. A pivotal experience working as a peer advisor in the advising center further ignited her passion for school counseling, and from there, she began to consider the possibilities of a career in academic advising.
After moving to Connecticut, Jessica quickly realized the power of transferable skills and networking. While job searching in her new home, she built a strong network with her alma mater, which led to a part-time job that helped her during her transition. This opportunity turned into another part-time position that introduced her to the field of higher education. This role allowed Jessica to bridge her growing interest in high school counseling with her newfound passion for college advising. By leveraging her transferable skills and the power of networking, Jessica discovered her true passion for academic advising and career coaching.
Through her work with students, Jessica observed that many were constrained by misconceptions about career paths. Students often limited their exploration to just 10-12 careers they were familiar with, overlooking countless other possibilities. Additionally, they often felt restricted by the major they had chosen, thinking it dictated their career trajectory. Jessica’s passion for helping students break free from these misconceptions drove her to author The Career GPS: Navigating and Avoiding The 9 Obstacles That Detour Career Exploration. Through this book, she offers practical advice to students on how to avoid common pitfalls and take charge of their career journeys with confidence.
In her current role, Jessica integrates career readiness into her everyday advising practice. Her advising philosophy centers on empowering students to become self-directed in their career exploration. She focuses on helping students recognize their transferable skills and understand the various opportunities available to them. Through reflective exercises and thoughtful guidance, Jessica ensures that students have the tools and confidence to navigate their own career paths.
Jessica’s vision for the future is rooted in expanding her reach and deepening her impact on students’ career development. Recently, she began advising biology students, where she continues to challenge common misconceptions about career paths and helps students explore a broad range of possibilities. Whether through direct support or by connecting students to the right resources, Jessica is committed to empowering them with the tools they need to navigate their futures. Looking ahead, she aims to launch new career exploration programming specifically tailored for biology majors.
Jessica encourages fellow Career Champions to embrace a flexible and open-minded approach in their roles. She believes that career readiness is not a separate initiative but an integral part of how we guide and support students across the university. By weaving career conversations into everyday interactions, she sees an opportunity for all educators and staff to play a meaningful role in student success. Her ongoing work aims to create a world where career exploration is no longer hindered by misunderstandings but rather empowered by the belief that every student has the ability to find a fulfilling and diverse range of career opportunities.
