5 Ways to Prepare for a Career Fair

Attending a Career Fair to speak with employers and make new connections can be one of the most impactful experiences for your professional journey. With this exciting opportunity at hand, it’s important that you do as much preparation as possible to put your best foot forward for employers and recruiters. By following just a few tips – and by using resources from the Center for Career Readiness and Life Skills, such as 12twenty, Quinncia, and the Iris Air photobooth—you’ll be set to make a strong impression!

Research Employers in Advance through 12twenty

UConn’s career platform 12twenty makes it easy to see who’s coming to the Career Fair! After selecting the event, click on the Employers tab to view the full list. From there, you can start building a target list of organizations you want to meet that align with your interests. Recruiters will notice when you know their company’s missions, values, and recent projects instead of asking general questions. Both steps will save you time and help you stand out to recruiters through demonstrated interest!

A great way to prepare is to start by researching employers you’d like to connect with. Students can visit 12Twenty to view attending employers.

Prepare Resume and LinkedIn Materials

Your résumé is often the first impression you make, so make sure you update it with your most recent experiences, so it reflects the roles you’re interested in. UConn offers Quinncia, an on-demand résumé review tool that provides instant feedback on formatting, clarity, and ATS compatibility. Use Quinncia’s suggestions to refine your résumé and then print multiple copies to bring with you.

Are you in need of a better headshot? Visit the Iris Air Photobooth at the Storrs Career Center for a free photoshoot session! Similarly, students at other UConn campuses can visit their Career Centers for headshot assistance. A sharp profile photo instantly improves your credibility and makes a promising first impression online and in-person.

Updating your Resume and LinkedIn will help you stand out to employers by showcasing your strengths and experiences! Students can book an appointment with a Career Coach at the Career Center to update and perfect their materials.

Practice Your Elevator Pitch

Preparing a short elevator pitch for employers ahead of time may be one of the most important steps you take. Recruiters will often ask you to tell them about yourself, and this is your opportunity to showcase your interests and experiences. Focus on your name, major, graduation year, career interests, and one or two highlights (such as an internship, leadership role, or project). Practicing your pitch until it feels natural will help you start conversations with confidence. For tips and an example, check out this short video on how to construct an elevator pitch.

Dress For Success

Your outfit always communicates professionalism first: Choose attire that makes you feel confident and aligns with the expectations of your industry. Business formal is a safe choice, but smart casual may be appropriate depending on your career path. For guidance on putting together the right look, check out UConn’s Workplace Attire Guide.

At a professional event such as a career fair, your attire speaks first! Be sure to check out our Workplace Attire guide on the Career Center website.

Follow Up!

Your work is not over once you attend the fair- always make sure to follow up with employers through LinkedIn, email, or with a business card! Hundreds of students will be attending the fair and speaking to the same employers, so this one easy step will instantly help you stand out and highlight your professional habits. In addition to connecting with employers at the fair, sending a timely note thanking them for speaking with you proves you communicate well, respect their time, and take their role seriously.

After attending the fair, maintaining contact with employers you spoke with can help you stand out. Students can do this by sending a timely email or connecting on LinkedIn!
