EMPLOYERS

UConn students are prepared to jump into the professional world that surrounds our Avery Point campus. They are talented, resilient and career-ready with necessary critical thinking, communication and innovation skills required to thrive in today’s global economy. The Center for Career Development provides coaching sessions for students, including resume workshops, career development modules in FYE (Freshman Year Experience) classes and LinkedIn clinics. UConn’s career services are connected throughout all campuses through the online platform Handshake which offers opportunities for employers to post jobs and internships for all students and alumni to view.

RECRUIT AND ENGAGE

Fall & Spring Career Fairs: The Fall and Spring Career Fairs provide an opportunity for employers from corporate, government and nonprofit sectors to attract Hartford student talent for full-time employment, internships, or other professional opportunities. The Fall Career Fair occurs in late September and the Spring Fair takes place in early March.

The Center provides coaching sessions for students, including resume workshops, career development modules in FYE (Freshman Year Experience) and LinkedIn clinics. The office is also guided by a student Advisory Council, which meets monthly to provide student insight on career development needs. We welcome employers – especially alums – to co-present to our students in any of our professional development workshops. There are various student clubs and organizations on campus – present on a topic related to their area of interest.

Employer Guest blogger! We welcome our employers to be a guest blogger on our UConn Center for Career Development Career Communities web page.  Simply pick your industry or field’s career community and write a blog on career insight from an employer perspective! Topics can include tips on job search, interviewing, industry/field trends, general career advice. The topic is up to you and a great way to brand your organization as industry experts! Employer Career Champion In support of Career Everywhere, the Center for Career Development sponsors a Career Champion program that connects and engages faculty, staff, alumni, and employer partners who are actively assisting students in determining and reaching their career goals. We know that students seek advice about their career aspirations and plans from all around – family, friends, faculty, staff, alumni and employer partners – not just our career office.  We believe that extending this opportunity to our valued campus partners sends a message to students – your future talent – but also gives you an opportunity to brand and network with other Career Champions on campus – faculty, staff and alumni. The Career Champion Program is designed to be flexible, understanding that employers already have their plates full and asking them to do one more thing can be daunting. There is no monetary cost and there is no minimum time requirement. The goal of identifying Career Champions is to create a community around common language and common goals to enhance the readiness and employability of our students. We plan to recognize Career Champions regularly at our events; and to provide access to our services. We will also ask our employer partners to provide any expertise they’d like to share with peer Champions (faculty, staff, alums) as well as with students – but this is purely voluntary.  And, of course, we will celebrate you and the group’s successes each semester.

The university uses Handshake, an online job board, for all internship, co-op, and career-related job postings.

    • Approximately 800 total students
    • Many of these students are freshmen and sophomores and will begin their studies (UConn has more than 110+ majors) and then change campus to Storrs to complete their degree. Coming on-campus is a great opportunity for you to brand your company with them early, so they’re thinking about you as they fine-tune their studies and plan for the future.
    • Undergraduate students can complete degrees in Liberal Arts (American Studies, English, General Studies, Maritime Studies, and Marine Sciences) at the Avery Point campus.
    • Avery Point is home to the Department of Marine Sciences; the associated Marine Sciences and Technology Center; the Connecticut Sea Grant; the Connecticut Institute for Resilience and Climate Adaption (CIRCA); Project Oceanology and Mystic Aquarium Research Labs.
    • Avery Point also offers a number of graduate and professional programs including Engineering, Nursing, Oceanography, and Teaching.
    • Many of these students are non-traditional – commuters, working either full- or part-time, etc. These students are often more mature and have been in the workforce – or are working their way through school.
If you’re interested in any of these opportunities, please contact Wendy Kopp, Corporate Partner Relations Coordinator, UConn Center for Career Development.
