Job Summary:
Teachers at Booker T. Washington Elementary are responsible for delivering effective, high-quality, rigorous instruction in their classroom that produces strong results and student understanding. Educators at BTWA are committed to leading and teaching through an anti-racist lens, will work to make their classrooms safe, joyful environments, and build relationships with their students to ensure every student can be successful. At the Kindergarten level, our model includes 2 adults in every classroom, allowing for increased attention for each scholar.
Our academic program is driven by our believe that ALL students can and will achieve at high levels when exposed to high quality instructional materials and provided with direct instruction to meet their individual needs. Elementary teachers work with their teams to develop high quality lesson plans that utilize the core curriculum materials. Additionally, teachers develop small group lesson plans to meet the needs of all of the learners in the classroom. Teachers implement the principles of the Science of Reading and utilized a structured literacy approach. Assessments are valued as they provide a window into student learning and these data are collected and analyzed at least weekly. Small group lesson plans are developed and adjusted based on these data. Parents are an integral part of their scholars’ learning and are regularly communicated with on at least a weekly basis. Teachers develop strong relationships family members and work collaboratively as a team on behalf of the scholar. Teachers implement a warm/demanding approach to classroom management in their classrooms and develop strong, trusting relationships with their scholars.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Prepare weekly lesson plans in conjunction with the other members of his/her teaching team
- Work actively with the entire teaching team to ensure that all students receive comparable learning experiences
- Meet with students and parents in primary class assignment on a regular basis to review progress and discuss areas for further development;
- Planning and delivering daily lessons that are grade appropriate, and differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students
- Creating and administering benchmark assessments to measure student progress/achievements in all subject areas;
- Assessing students academic needs, and administering intervention as discussed by SIT/PPT team;
- Interpreting and using data to drive instruction;
- Maintaining rigor and challenge for high academic achievement;
- Creating a learning environment that is conducive to learning while making learning fun and interesting for all students;
- Developing a positive relationship, attitude/rapport with students, parents and staff;
- Collaborating with grade-level partners and other staff through grade level and vertical team meetings, staff meetings, professional development, etc.;
- Being visible in the school community by attending after-school extracurricular activities (e.g. literacy nights, open houses, etc.)
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
CT Teacher Certification
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk/table and working on a computer or standing to teach.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to traverse classroom and adjust one’s tone and height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child
