Thank you for your recent inquiry into the Essex County Sheriff’s Department. Acquiring information about our department is the first step in a what could be a very competitive and lucrative career.

Correctional officers supervise the daily activities of inmates, ensuring that inmates obey the rules and regulations of the facility. They must also ensure the whereabouts of all inmates at all times. On any given day, officers search inmates for contraband, such as weapons and drugs, settle disputes between inmates, and enforce discipline.

The Essex County Sheriff’s Department is currently seeking individuals interested in joining a multi-talented, multi-cultural and enthusiastic department of correctional professionals. Correctional Officers provide care, custody, and control for both sentenced inmates and pre-trial detainees.

The Essex County Sheriff’s department encourages constant growth and progression of its employees in their career paths by making several different avenues available within and outside the walls of our department. We offer the ability to advance from Correctional Officer to Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and beyond through a competitive series of testing. We also have a K-9-unit, Security Investigations Division, Tactical Response Team, and Apprehension Team to name a few of the many facets of our department.

The Essex County Sheriff’s Department requires all applicants to:

  • Minimum 21 years old
  • Associates Degree or 60 credits towards a Bachelor’s Degree AND/OR
  • Two years Military Experience (Must be in good standing with military)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Valid License to Carry Firearm for Correctional Officer applicants (Applicants may be in process of obtaining during hiring process but must have license prior to graduating academy)
