Cures Start Here. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Fred Hutch), home of three Nobel laureates, is an independent, nonprofit research institution dedicated to the development and advancement of biomedical research to eliminate cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. Recognized internationally for its pioneering work in bone-marrow transplantation, Fred Hutch’s five scientific divisions collaborate to form a unique environment for conducting basic and applied science. The Fred Hutch, in collaboration with its clinical and research partners, the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s, is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Pacific Northwest. Careers Start Here.

At Fred Hutch, we believe that the innovation, collaboration, and rigor that result from diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission of eliminating cancer and related diseases. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems. Fred Hutch is in pursuit of becoming an antiracist organization. We are committed to ensuring that all candidates hired share our commitment to diversity, antiracism, and inclusion.

The Walter Laboratory in the Clinical Research Division is recruiting an outstanding postdoctoral research fellow to work as part of a team investigating new treatments for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) primarily focused on improving existing, and developing novel, antibody-based immunotherapies, and rendering them safer for clinical application. Current projects include preclinical drug development/testing (in part with academic and industry partners), studies on mechanisms of action and resistance of antibody-based therapeutics and identification of strategies to overcome these limitations, and development of approaches to protect normal tissues from the toxicities of AML-targeted therapies (e.g. via use of genome editing). We anticipate this position will commence July/August 2020.

Responsibilities

The newly hired fellow will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator and senior laboratory personnel and will be involved in the following techniques/duties:

  • Generation of recombinant antibodies and other protein therapeutics via transient and permanent expression systems
  • Conduct of immunization strategies to raise new antibodies
  • Generation of engineered/gene-edited human leukemia cells
  • Tissue culture of mammalian cell lines and patient-derived primary human cells
  • Antibody drug conjugate (ADC) cytotoxicity, antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, T-cell and NK-cell cytotoxicity assays
  • Flow cytometry-based immunophenotyping, FACS isolation of mammalian cells
  • Purification, cloning, and manipulation of RNA, cDNA and genomic DNA
  • PCR and RT-PCR, including quantitative assays using qPCR
  • Lentiviral vector modification, lentiviral particle preps and viral transduction
  • Protein gels, immunoprecipitation, western blotting, immunofluorescence microscopy
  • General laboratory duties and maintenance of laboratory equipment

Qualifications

  • A recent PhD in a relevant field of biology such as immunology, cell and molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, pathology, bioinformatics, or genome sciences
  • Ability to drive an individual project but also be highly collaborative with academic and industrial partners
  • Ability to work independently and with scientific rigor
  • Interest in academic career and applying for independent funding support

To be successful in this position, the postdoctoral research fellow must be organized, clear and concise in their communication, enthusiastic, a team player, and have a desire to establish a career as a future independent investigator. Fellowship opportunities are available through several philanthropic and government organizations; fellow will have administrative support for the application process.

Applicants must include:

  • Cover letter discussing your interest in this position, research interests and career goals
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Contact information for three references
