The USAISR is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC). The institute is the U.S. Army’s lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties. Its mission is to provide requirements driven combat casualty care medical solutions and products for injured soldiers from self -aid through definitive care across the full spectrum of military operations. Additionally it provides state-of-the-art burn, trauma, and critical care to DoD beneficiaries around the world.
The participant selected for this educational opportunity will participate in translational research as it applies to the study of wound healing in both the pre-clinical and clinical settings. The participant will be trained in multiple research methods to include animal (porcine) handling, care and behavior; data collection; and specimen processing techniques. The participant will conduct research under the guidance of principal investigators and staff scientists in the laboratory during animal surgeries and in a clinical setting conducting approved human clinical research.
This appointment is a three month summer research appointment. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
Candidate must be pursuing or have recently completed a bachelor’s degree.
