Use Your Radio or Unified Communications Expertise in a Global Career.

Become an Information Management Technical Specialist.

The U.S. Department of State’s Information Management Technical Specialists, Radio (IMTS-R) and Unified Communications (IMTS-UC), help to strengthen national security—all while developing both professionally and personally. Our professionals support the work of the U.S. Department of State to defend and advance our nation’s interests overseas. They encounter challenges that will broaden their expertise as they travel abroad and experience new cultures, and their work will make a lasting impact toward sustaining and supporting diplomacy worldwide.

We offer two opportunities that combine unique communications and technical challenges with the opportunity to pursue cross-cultural interests:

1. Information Management Technical Specialists – Radio (IMTS-R) install, repair and maintain a wide range of radio and telecommunications systems. They provide oversight for assorted hardware and software procurement, logistics and maintenance of radio equipment, parts, and components. These professionals serve at regional locations throughout the world and travel to U.S. Embassies within and outside of their base location to support radio programs. Our radio technicians are responsible for ensuring the safety and integrity of radio networks around the world.

2. Information Management Technical Specialists – Unified Communications (IMST-UC) install, repair and maintain telecommunications and telephone systems. They provide oversight for assorted hardware procurement, logistics and maintenance programs. Working with U.S. diplomats and foreign nationals in host countries, they support diplomacy through information technology management and maintenance. These professionals serve at regional locations throughout the world and travel to U.S. Embassies within and outside of their base location to support embassy operations. Our professionals are responsible for ensuring the safety and integrity of all information, by protecting classified material, providing on-going technical support, and optimizing systems and network operations.

Physical activity is essential in both of these roles and includes manual installations and on-site repairs.

In return for their service, they have access to continued training and career development programs; health and medical coverage; federal retirement benefits; and generous paid leave. When serving overseas, paid housing or an appropriate housing allowance is provided, as well as paid education for dependent children K through 12.
