The Internship on Scholarship Program offers on-campus and virtual internships geared towards undergraduate UConn students, regardless of citizenship status, hosted by UConn departments and supported via scholarship funds. Internships are offered by departments throughout the university including student affairs, academic affairs, and administration. The benefits of participating in the Internship on Scholarship Program include developing transferable skills for future career endeavors, expanding your network and connections on campus, receiving an alternative form of support for your work, and gaining experiential learning to add to your résumé.
To be eligible for the Internship on Scholarship Program, you must be:
- Be an actively enrolled undergraduate student at the University of Connecticut
- Submit a complete application for your internship of interest by the application deadline
- No prior work experience is necessary
Priority consideration is based on:
- Financial need as defined by the Office of Student Financial Aid Services
- First generation student status
- In-state student status
- Students who have remaining unmet need after exhausting all other funding sources
If you are not sure whether you are eligible, we highly recommend checking your eligibility with the Office of Financial Aid Services before working on an application. In order to check your eligibility, please reach out to Suzanne Peters at suzanne.peters@uconn.edu.
UConn undergraduate students are eligible for the Internship on Scholarship Program. Priority consideration will be given to students who meet the following criteria:
- Financial need as defined by the Office of Student Financial Aid Services
- First generation student status
- In-state student status
- Students who have remaining unmet need after exhausting all other funding sources
When a new opportunity becomes available, all eligible students will be notified via email. Students will review available internship opportunities and complete an online application requiring a resume and a few short-answer question responses. Applications will be reviewed by the Office of Student Financial Aid Services to confirm eligibility, and students will then be contacted by the sponsoring department for next steps. Next steps typically include an interview with the sponsoring department. Students are encouraged to set up an appointment with the Center for Career Development for assistance preparing a resume and/or practicing for upcoming interviews.
Departments throughout the university provide internship opportunities depending on the semester. Some past examples include the Dean of Students, Center for Career Development, Student Activities, and the Allied Health Sciences Department.
Internships on Scholarship are offered throughout the year. Internships can take place during the fall or spring semesters, during the summer, or a combination. Internships can also vary in length from one week to one year depending on the needs of the sponsoring department. The start and end dates of the internship will always be included in the internship description.
Students are welcome to approach a department of interest and introduce the Internship on Scholarship Program to them or suggest an internship opportunity. If the department agrees and has funding available, they can follow the steps to formally create an Internship on Scholarship opportunity on the Internship on Scholarship Program Sites webpage.
The scholarship amount varies and is determined by the department offering the internship based on the funding they have available and the size of the project the intern will be working on. The amount of the scholarship will always be included in the internship description.
Departments allocate a portion of their operating budget otherwise normally allocated to student labor to pay for the scholarship. The scholarship will be disbursed through the student fee bill, paying any balance due or refunded to the student if the fee bill is clear at the time of disbursement.
Due to the high demand from students for Internship on Scholarship opportunities, students are only allowed to hold one internship through the program at a time. However, students can complete an unlimited number of internships during their tenure at UConn.
Interns will be provided with an opportunity to complete an experiential project that will enhance learning while meeting departmental goals. Interns should encourage their sponsor to complete the Student Intern Learning Roadmap and Internship Expectations document created by the Center for Career Development at the beginning of the experience to develop a set of goals. At the end of the internship, both the intern and the sponsor should also complete an end of term/project evaluation to outline if the goals have been met and provide feedback on the experience.
