Advice & Perspective: How Goal Setting (and Pivoting) Led me to Become a Leader in my Field

Before founding her own real estate agency, Shanyelle Young’s ’92 (CLAS) career was marked by numerous pivots, both professionally and personally. Her initial goal was to climb the ladder in the corporate world, but her goals shifted when she took time off work to start a family. To have more flexible hours, Shanyelle pivoted to real estate, yet kept that same goal of climbing the ladder, albeit in a different field. During this conversation you will learn how pivoting and goal setting can help you become a leader in your field too.

Through Shanyelle’s advice and perspective, you will hear that it’s okay to make drastic pivots in your career, so long as it’s part of a larger goal. To achieve your goals, you will learn how to effectively set them and pivot when appropriate, no matter if you’re a current college student or a recent grad. Beyond just her time after college, Shanyelle will also share many more times that she set goals and pivoted and what she learned from each experience.

Shanyelle also shares her experiences as one of the few black women in the white male-dominated field that is real estate, as well as what day-to-day operations at S Young Realty & Associates, LLC look like.
