Being in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources can be a little difficult because it’s hard to find jobs that are exactly related to what you may want to do. Most assume that the college only focuses on agriculture, environmental sciences, or even animal science. But that’s not entirely true. Being an Allied Health Science major in the College of Ag allows me to have more access to a wider range of careers in the health profession. One of the careers we’ll be exploring today is a career in Public Health.
Before we get started, let me tell you about Public Health and the opportunities that can come from this. Public Health focuses on creating healthy communities through education, research, and promoting healthy lifestyles. This can mean vaccinating children and adults in order to prevent disease, educating those about the risk of alcohol and tobacco, setting standards to protect workers, and to develop school nutrition programs that will ensure kids have access to clean and healthy foods. Being able to create a community where injuries can be prevented, coupled with an understanding of the environment around the community, helps determine if an individual’s or group’s health may be due to their socioeconomic status.
Some examples of the variety of fields that are present in Public Health include:

• Restaurant inspectors
• Health educators
• Nutritionists
• Social Workers
• Epidemiologists
• Public Health Nurses and Physicians
