The job search process can be an overwhelming one at times, especially if you do not know what resources are available to assist you. Let the Center for Career Readiness and Life Skills make the process more manageable by helping you create a job search plan. Here are quick answers to the most common questions we get about finding a job. For further questions about our responses or any other questions, schedule an appointment with a career coach. 

When it comes to the job search, the quality of applications is more important than the quantity of applications. Spending a significant amount of time on a handful of applications could lead to the same interview rate as submitting hundreds using an “easy apply” online method. So, there is no perfect number of jobs to apply for; instead, consider devoting more time and energy to a select set of jobs you’re especially excited about. 

Employment scams are an unfortunate reality of the job search process. Be sure to verify the information you receive regarding any opportunity by checking a company’s website, social media platforms, and/or LinkedIn profile. If you are ever unsure of an opportunity’s legitimacy, contact a career coach to help you investigate. 

After an application deadline has passed, if you have not heard anything in two weeks, it’s appropriate to follow up and ask for an update on the application process. Be sure to give the employer grace, as hiring timelines change for a wide variety of reasons, and you never know what could have caused the delay. 

Career coaches cannot match students directly with jobs because we are not experts on exactly what employers or students are looking for. We can, however, show students how to access the UConn employer and alumni communities for them to take advantage of on their own. And we’re here for advice and guidance along the way.
