3 Organizations Students Interested in Animals Should Join

One of the best ways to learn more about different career paths and opportunities within Animal Science is to join a student or professional organization. There are a wide variety of opportunities for students to get involved and learn more careers in animal science.

The Wildlife Society, UCONN Chapter

The UCONN chapter of the Wildlife Society hosts events and educational activities to promote wildlife conservation and awareness for members and the UCONN community. This student organization is a branch of the national Wildlife Society and acts as a connection between students, professionals, and researchers that work with wildlife. Students can participate in fun activities and professional development through presentations and networking opportunities. The organization also holds field trips based on attendance and club participation to animal conservatories and outdoor destinations.

How to Join

The Wildlife Society at UCONN meets on Mondays at 6:00 PM in Young Building Room 327. To join, please request to join their roster through UConntact. Their UConntact page can be found here.

American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is a professional organization that conducts events, advocacy, education, and career services for veterinarians. This is a great resource for students curious about the life of a veterinary student or full-time veterinarian.

  • Education & Career: Check out AVMA’s Education & Career tab on their website to learn about veterinary colleges, the internship and externship search, and career development.
  • Resources & Tools: The AVMA has educational materials and advice on how to promote wellbeing and diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, maintain finances within a veterinary practice, and care for animals with the newest technologies.
  • Events & News: Each year the AVMA hosts a wide variety of events for professional development. They also post news, data, and journals for further education and exposure to the field of veterinary studies.
