Student Benefits for Veterans

Many students among the UConn population have served overseas in the US Armed Forces. Most of these students decided to go back to school to get a college degree following their military service to have a successful post-military career. UConn appreciates all the sacrifices that service members have made to protect our freedom and offers benefits to assist veterans in completing their studies. While these benefits are small compared to their immense sacrifice, they can make a difference in these students’ ability to finish their studies.

For starters, UConn offers class credit according to a student’s duration in active duty. Therefore, the more time served, the more transfer credits they could receive. The requirements to receive this credit are a record of honorable service, 90 days of foreign service time, and completion of an interview and another assignment.

There are numerous scholarships for students who have served in the armed forces and the children of service members who died in the line of duty. In addition, other scholarships are available to students who participate in the ROTC program who have not served overseas. Students can use these scholarships for tuition, study-abroad costs, or other related fees.

UConn also offers a one-credit UNIV course for students who identify themselves in the military community. The purpose of the course is to teach students about all the military-related academic benefits, in addition to the multitude of services that UConn has in place to serve, assist, and honor veterans. The course also serves as a place for students to meet peers who have shared similar challenges due to being exposed to military life and share stories to foster long-term connections.
