LGBTQ+ Organizations

Many organizations are available to students on the LGBTQ+ Affinity page, and we’ll discuss several of those organizations in this article.

The first that we’ll cover is the organization 500 Queer Scientists. This organization supports LGBTQ+ people and allies working in STEM jobs via a visibility campaign. People can publish an image of themselves, their story, and their contact information to help create an inclusive and close community. So far, there are over 1,625 submissions. These self-submitted biographies boost awareness and recognition of LGBTQ+ professionals in the scientific community. The organization has several goals, including ensuring LGBTQ+ role models for the next generation of STEM professionals. People can also post job openings, and you can apply right on the site. If you are interested in 500 Queer Scientists, check out their newslettercommunity job board, and calendar of LGBTQ+/STEM events.

The second organization we’ll cover is the Rainbow Round Table (RRT) of the American Library Association. Their mission statement says they are “committed to serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, pansexual, genderqueer, queer, intersex, agender, asexual, and ally (LGBTQIA+) professional communities and population at large.” The RRT fosters and supports free and necessary access to information. It provides members and the community at large with a space to discuss the needs of the LGBTQIA+ professional community and an environment for education. The RRT recommends books, highlights LGBTQIA+ authors, hosts conferences, and has resources for professionals.

The third and final organization is MoneyGeek. MoneyGeek is a company specializing in personal finance. They have a page on their website dedicated to financing gender confirmation surgery. This website is extremely helpful for anyone interested in receiving some type of gender-confirming surgery. It describes an overview of the procedure in addition to breaking down the different types of surgeries available, the costs, how to navigate health insurance, and alternative options.
