What is Public Administration?

According to Forbes, public administration is concerned with addressing “some of society’s most intractable challenges in areas like housing, poverty and the environment.” It is a career well-suited for anyone interested in building a better society for everyone and specifically involves the implementation of policies that lead to a successful society. 

Individuals seeking a position in public administration should possess strong analytical, communication, decision-making, leadership, problem-solving, and time management skills. Here are a few possible career opportunities for individuals who receive a bachelor’s or master’s degree in public administration: 

  • Emergency Management Director. These individuals plan and respond to natural disasters and other emergencies and typically work in a government setting. 
  • Social and Community Service Manager. These individuals organize and supervise programs and organization that support public wellbeing and typically work for nonprofits, social service companies, and the government. 
  • Urban and Regional Planner. These individuals coordinate land use practices in communities in response to events like population growth and aging infrastructure. They typically need a master’s degree to obtain a job.
