POSITION SUMMARY
Based in Washington, DC, American Councils is currently seeking an intern for a paid internship with the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program. NSLI-Y is a critical component of a multi-agency initiative to increase U.S. citizens’ capacity to engage with people from around the world through the critical languages of Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian, and Turkish. NSLI-Y is a program of U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. NSLI-Y provides merit-based scholarships to U.S. high school students for overseas language immersion and virtual programs. The NSLI-Y program also includes Virtual NSLI-Y, an online 10-week, beginner-level foreign language and culture experience, that introduces participants to the people and culture of places where the target language is spoken. The NSLI-Y Intern will help with tasks associated with online outreach, alumni engagement, and programming for overseas and virtual language programs. The intern will work alongside a diverse group of U.S. based staff to gain practical skills and experience in non-profit organization, overseas and virtual language programming, international education, and program administration. The intern will work closely with the NSLI-Y Administration team and will report to the NSLI-Y Senior Program Officer for NSLI-Y Administration. Preference will be given to NSL-Y alumni in good standing.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
• Program Administration – Assist in administrative tasks of the NSLI-Y Administration team, including alumni events and Virtual NSLI-Y activities. Tasks include tracking document tracking and information dissemination.
• Online Engagement and Outreach – Contribute to the NSLI-Y social media presence, including Discord. Contribute to social media and online interactive content creation. Write alumni feature stories.
• Data Organization and Evaluation – Compile, organize and track program information. Maintain accurate and updated student records. Support NSLI-Y Administration with evaluating student applications.
• Communication – Respond to NSLI-Y Administration inquiries from students and parents accurately and professionally.
Additional tasks and responsibilities may be assigned depending on program needs.
ANTICIPATED INTERNSHIP DATES
The preferred start date is in January 2024. The internship will continue through late May with a possibility of an extension. Scheduling can be flexible, with an expected 10-15 hours from Monday – Friday (8:30 AM – 5 PM EST).
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s or graduate’s degree seeking (or recent graduate) in an associated field (e.g. foreign languages, communications, international education, education, international relations, government, area studies, etc.);
• Self-starter with the ability to work independently in a hybrid environment, while accepting guidance and contributing to a larger team;
• Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task;
• Excellent English written and oral communication skills
• Ability to practice discretion and sensitivity, especially in handling confidential information.
• Strong organizational and analytical skills, execution of tasks, and attention to detail required;
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel;
• Proficiency with social media;
• Preference for experience with multimedia platforms such as Canva and/or Adobe;
• Preference for virtual exchange or study abroad/international experience, including NSLI-Y.
