University staff and faculty are pivotal in ensuring that student employment becomes a transformative experience, fostering essential career skills that will benefit students beyond graduation. Work+ UConn is committed to integrating work and learning experiences, aligning with the university’s mission, and significantly impacting student success. 

Student employment at Work+ UConn aims to:

What You Bring: Supervisor Commitments 

As a supervisor within Work+ UConn, you play a crucial role in creating meaningful student employment experiences. Here are the commitments expected from supervisors: 

  • Complete Training Modules:
    • Prior to the start of the Fall Semester, dedicate 2-3 hours to complete training modules covering Work+ overview, its significance, hiring procedures, onboarding protocols, supervision techniques, and competency development resources. 
  • Work+ Overview
    • Familiarize yourself with the Work+ program, understanding its objectives, and recognizing its importance in shaping students’ career readiness and success beyond graduation. 
  • Hiring, Onboarding & Supervising:
    • Utilize available content and resources provided by Work+ UConn to support you in the hiring, onboarding, and supervision processes, ensuring a seamless and enriching experience for working learners. 
  • Maintain Communication with Core Team:
    • Maintain regular communication with the Work+ UConn Core Team, providing updates, feedback, and insights to contribute to the continuous improvement of the program.
  • Onboarding Meetings:
    • Meet with working learners at the start of each semester for onboarding sessions, reviewing their duties, and establishing a roadmap for their growth and development, allocating around 1 hour for each session. 
  • Competency Modules and Becoming Career Ready:
    • Engage working learners in competency modules designed to enhance their career readiness and equip them with essential skills for their professional journey. 
  • Conduct Assessments:
    • Complete assessments throughout the experience to set goals, evaluate working learner’s performance and determine competency development as the year progresses.
  • Regular Check-Ins:
    • Conduct regular group or individual check-ins with working learners, providing them with support, guidance, and feedback, with each session lasting around 30 minutes. 

FAQ

After your staff has gone through the professional onboarding process the time commitment from your professional staff is minimal. 

Any enrolled UConn student qualifies, but units opt-in to utilize this experience, and their student employees become part of Work+! 

Yes! Work+ can be customized to best fit the needs of you and your working learners, contact us to learn more

  • If you have new working learners joining your unit that needs access to the Work+ resources please use this form to alert the Work+ staff so we can get them in the system.  
  • If you have working learners leaving your unit that you need us to remove from the reports please use this form to alert the Work+ staff. 

There are no tests or grades like a course would, but instead Work+ focuses on self-evaluation of skills with input from their direct supervisor.
