International Internships & Co-ops
An international work experience gives students the opportunity to gain valuable employment skills with a global perspective. Students can secure international internships through UConn as well as through independent, private agencies or companies. Use this reference guide for questions to ask and points to consider when making the decision to work away from your home country.
Below find some of the resources you may elect to utilize in your search for an international experience. Please know that these resources are not all-encompassing and that the Center for Career Development has not vetted every experience to assure its quality. In addition, if you pursue an experience for academic credit, the University of Connecticut requires that Education Abroad protocol be followed, including registering with UConn Global Affairs (in accordance with the UConn Student International Travel Policy) and ensuring that health insurance is maintained for the duration of the trip and covers international occurrences.
UConn Office of Global Affairs, Education Abroad offers over 300 study abroad programs in 65 countries, with many having academic internship components attached. Search through www.abroad.uconn.edu, using internship as a keyword, or contact Education Abroad directly, in Rowe 117.
Going Global, accessible through UConn’s online recruiting system, HuskyCareerLink, is a database containing over 16 million worldwide internship and job openings, plus country Career Guides and corporate profiles of employers across the globe.
Global Edge, affiliated with Michigan State University’s Broad College of Business, features an International Internship Directory. This directory can be utilized to search for international internship and volunteer opportunities offered by colleges and universities, non-profit and government agencies, and private organizations.
Go Overseas features an internship search of over 4,000 providers. Industries include engineering, journalism, healthcare, economics, entrepreneurship, and more. According to this resource, each accepted program must feature an “educational/practical” component.
Go Abroad.com includes a search of volunteer programs, study abroad, and employment opportunities abroad. Popular counties include South Africa, China, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Their verification system for opportunities include participant reviews, staff interviews, and test email inquiries.
Enternships features internships and full-time jobs in the United Kingdom. All positions are reported as paid and compliant with national minimum wage legislation. Industries include accounting, sales, social media, and design – among others.
