Using AI for Career Exploration

As a supplement to career coaching and experiential learning, AI tools can help you explore potential career paths that match your knowledge, skills, and interests. Effective prompting and career exploration-specific AI tools may help you uncover new ideas and information as you think about your career options.

Start with some self-reflection. When using AI tools to aid in career exploration, ask yourself some questions: what am I most interested in? What skills have I mastered or am I developing? What are my passions and values? What type of experience do I already have? Conducting a self-assessment (like Focus 2) can help you articulate these factors.

Detailed prompts yield better results. If you are just beginning to explore career options, a simple prompt may be enough to generate ideas to jumpstart the process. The more information you can provide about yourself in your prompt, including your education, skills, goals, values, and even your personality traits, the more relevant the content will be.

Stay curious and verify what you find. AI tools can introduce you to career paths you might not have considered, but always cross-check information with reliable sources, talk to professionals in the field to get more refined insight, and use AI as a jumping-off point – not the final word – in your decision-making process.
